Work on installation and painting The CreativeMindClass Blog
Nicole Mueller is a San Francisco-based visual artist. Her work includes large-scale paintings installation, murals, and murals inspired by the look from stained glass. Driven by process, her abstract works are vibrant and saturated. They are constructed with layers of collage-like shapes. Her work explores the complexity of color, states of change, the dichotomies that exist within painting, the transitional nature of being, and the transition between the outside and inside, the tangible and intangible.
My background
I'm mostly a painter who is a full-time artist in San Francisco, California.
My professional experience includes painting murals, installation work, as well as doing arts administration as well as career advancement.
I was a student at The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore which is where I lived for several years prior to moving to the west coast.
Another big part of my mission and work is hosting Beyond the Studio with my fellow artist Amanda Adams, a podcast that aims to increase transparency in the art world through interviews with other contemporary artists on their careers routes.
My style
Most of what I do is instinctual that is driven by process. abstract, extremely saturated, made of color and layers of collage-like patterns.
I create large-scale artworks, light-activated window installations that mimic the effects of stained glass, and murals. Through this series I'm studying dichotomies, state of flux and the threshold between interior and exterior, the tangible and the intangible.
The key to creating my work
I believe that that showing up regularly for your work is essential. For me, creating a practice in the studio as well as setting goals for myself to keep moving forward has made it easier for me to prioritize my work when life gets in the way. Also, taking the time to slow down and rest or take breaks (for days, a month, or perhaps more).
