What's wrong with the Online Coaching Industry is Broken (And How You Can Fix It)

Aug 25, 2022

Believe it or not, I never wanted to instruct coaches on how to coach. But over the last seven years, I've gotten more involved in the business and I've become quite successful in my work. Therefore, I'm sure other coaches have been enthused to pick my brain for a bit.

This is when I began taking a closer look to what was going on within this field. The more I studied it I noticed people doing things that I thought they shouldn't be doing since they weren't going to work. In the event that you've been involved in the coaching business for a few years, you probably know that I'm talking aboutthat the industry of coaching is full of poor advice, false promises, and even some completely fraudulent activities.

And, even more troublingly is that there are trainers out there teaching things they do not have passion for, or competency in.

In some ways I'd go as in saying that the coaching industry is fundamentally flawed .

But there is an upside. It is possible to find an opportunity to become an effective and helpful online coach. It's just a matter of understanding what you're getting yourself into, and make sure you're doing it with good reasons. Let me explain...

Do not miss this:

We talked to the coach Sean Smith and he told us the reasons why he doesn't like the coaching business.

Learn from this seasoned veteran of the coaching industry about how you can achieve success as a coach. If you're a personal coaching, business or life coach, or any type of coach, you'll learn not just how to earn money as a coach, however, you'll also be able to live your mission and have a huge influence in the world.

Take a look at this class we developed in collaboration with Sean Smith, Coach Sean Smith on how to develop transformative online classes.

There's a "pyramid scheme" in online coaching

There are ads constantly on websites like YouTube as well as Instagram and Snapchat, but not anymore. As soon as you hit some milestone within your coaching company or get into a challenge, they begin to appear as tiny, nagging insects in your social media feeds. "Are you a coach who's really struggling to get clients? Here -- all you need to do is follow my proven method !"

I would sit on the sidelines and get annoyed by these. Now, I'm able to accept these as part of the cost to be part of an industry that's not controlled. Because the industry is unregulated, there is no consensus on what it takes to achieve success. That's the main cause of breaking the system as it becomes increasingly dificult for good, qualified professionals to make it.

There's no evidence of this in other industries. In all likelihood, there's not a person offering a course on how to become a lawyer within 30 days. And how you can get to medical school without taking any pesky examinations. Since that's ridiculous, right? There's a way for everyone to get a degree as a lawyer teacher or doctor or a therapist . Or any variety of other professions that are regulated. There are no shortcuts. And you certainly don't see any ads promising: "Seven Easy Steps to get your first patient on the Operating Table for Brain Surgeons(tm)."

The coaching profession has a lot of promisesand prayers for people's desperate needs. The focus is on the best way to train coaches on that, or coach coaches how to teach them to do that. Because the coaching industry's biggest consumer will be... you guessed the answer... the coach. Coaches will be the ones purchasing the best ways to be successful, and likely accounting for a large part of the revenues in the field of coaching.

Now don't get me off-base -- this is acceptable if you're a an interest in marketing and are proficient in teaching subjects that coaches need. If you're enthusiastic about, there's absolutely nothing wrong with giving only to people in your particular area of expertise.

It's because most individuals aren't particularly skilled or enthusiastic about it. They don't really would like to impart to others -however, they believe that's the only thing that they can succeed with.

What happens next? Coaching professionals alter their character simply to pursue success. In the absence of the moral argument of whether that's right or wrong it still causes problems. The only thing that matters for success I believe that it is the alignment.

Avoiding the trap of teaching other coaches

When I talk about alignment, I mean you need to discover what area of coaching aligns with the lessons you've learned in your personal daily life. Every one of us as a human being is a student of a few important lessons from our childhood. They are lessons were learned, and then used to overcome the challenges in our lives. It could be financial lesson, career lessons, or even relationships lessons.

The lessons you learned from your life are worth it for anyone who is interested, meaning they will literally take the time to listen to your story as well as what you have gained from it. The significance of that for business purposes is that your lessons from life can be a valuable product.

So, now the issue is: how do we build a business that incorporates all of your personal strengths, strengths and challenges and doesn't oblige you to perform things that you don't want to undertake? Because you don't want to lose focus from the lessons of life and get caught in the trap of simply teaching other people the best way to become a coach.

Consider the situation this way: if you teach from your personal experience, then you're the kind of thing that clients value. But if you simply coach others on how to become a successful coach, it's the information that clients find useful.

If that's true, then you're "secret ingredient" does not matter. It means your life lessons don't matter. That means that your personality doesn't need to be concerned about anything -- it's interchangeable. It's like you're the status of a commodity. Because the sole thing that matters is the people who purchase this information. The reason it's so critical for us to comprehend is that, if you are able to achieve an approach that doesn't matter, then you cannot feel satisfied or happy, and feel any fulfillment from the work you do because there's no reason to be.

It is important to begin by recognizing that you have value. Life lessons are worth remembering. You didn't learn this through a different program or coach -- it's your unique knowledge and understanding of the world.

The reason you should coach from the place of authenticity

If the "guaranteed universally-applied" approach is effective for you, it's still based upon inauthenticity. And that's one of the primary reasons that a large number people do not like to sell or don't want to do so. It's the reason that most selling techniques feel uncomfortable. (Which is a scientific term, btw.) This isn't due to the strategies themselves, but due to the fact that you're not in alignment with your real self. The belief at the heart of the matter that you've got the value.

For example, let's say you purchase a sales script for a pitch to prospective customers. If you do not trust what you're pitching someone, it's irrelevant the person who wrote the script, or if they made one million dollars with the script. The truth is what you speak out of your mouth , because your body is telling another narrative. Your potential customer is aware that you're trying to sell something that you haven't purchased!

This is why authenticity is crucial in advertising the work you do. There is a way to find the alignment that we've discussed, and find the voice within the sales pitch. If you're using the exact same sales strategy, you'll be more successful as you're coming from a place of integrity.

It's not all about the words we speak out of our mouths. If I'm confident about the product I'm selling since I've personally experienced the benefits of the product, therefore you can give me any sales strategy. I'm certain that my confidence will convince you, and my advocacy for you is going to pierce your objections.

It's the energy that people generally buy -- not the item. Your certainty is not your sales tactics or funnels for marketing.

It's time to become the type of online coach you want to be

I know that for those who aren't, this can be a challenge. It's likely that you'll face various fears, worries, and insecurities along the way. However, the most important thing to consider is do you have the drive to change the world? Do you want to be successful in doing something with your life experiences? Do you have the desire to assist others with the correct mindset? If so, then you'll be likely to be successful.

What ever you do, not be a jerk by taking away the primary ingredient in the procedure. Do not just aim to earn money, make a commitment to making a difference.
