Update: US Judge Warns Google that big changes will be made to stop illegal Play Store Monopoly

Aug 29, 2024

U.S. District Judge James Donato has cautioned Google that major changes may be imposed upon its Android app store after an investigation conducted by jury members found that Play Store operates as an illegal monopoly.

The Associated Press reports that Judge Donato suggested he may require Google to open up other stores sell apps to Android devices. This will help reduce Google's dominance in app distribution and the charging on its platform. The dominance of "nearly complete control" generates billions annually for Google and the ruling of the court may alter this. Google anticipating that it will incur costs up to 600 million dollars.

Google has raised concerns about the possibility of opening its Play Store to third-party app stores can expose users to security risk, leading to what Google describes as "security disorder. " However, despite these concerns, Judge Donato has stressed the need for an extensive overhaul as he stated "We will tear the barriers down; this is what's in store."

The case falls under an overall antitrust campaign against Google in addition to an important case involving the search engine that is set to begin in September. The judge will issue an order outlining what changes are required to the Play Store soon, possibly during the weeks leading up to Labor Day.

An article from The Verge on the same subject provides a list of Epic Games which are benefiting of these results, and it also has a caption to its article stating "Judge James Donato will issue his final ruling on the guidelines Google gives -- and Epic will receive it within a few weeks."
