The filmmaker Mayumi Yoshida is forging her personal path within the realm of personal storytelling.

Jul 15, 2023

Mayumi Yoshida is today, in the limelight for her movies, but when she heard about her path, she got to know her own filmmaking almost by chance. "I originally started acting as an actor" declares Mayumi. "There were not many opportunities to be a part of the roles, and a lack of roles that I really, believed in and cherished at the deepest level. They gave me the feeling of 'Oh this is me.'" So, when an opportunity came up to raise money to make a short movie, Mayumi was the first to take on the challenge to be a part of the film, and not only acting, as well in the role of director for the film, which tells the story of her personal life.

"That has led to an array of film festivals," Mayumi says. Mayumi. "It caused me to feel"Oh there's so much to be doing as a storyteller as well as an artist rather than just an actor." Since then, Mayumi has continued to improve her filmmaking skills, including collaborating with the musician Amanda Sum on artful music videos that defy expectations and test the limits of the format.

"The most valuable advice I've received from any other person than me was from someone who advised me to accept responsibility for my capabilities," says Mayumi. This is about being confident enough to defend what she believes in regardless of self-doubt. "Don't be afraid from saying"no" to anyone outside of you," she adds. "You might be thinking"But it's not yet working. Oh, but I won't get in. It's impossible for me to gain entry.' There has been no notification of this until now. They've been informed. So, leave it to them. Do the shot but it won't work. The majority of the time it's a win. out."

I had the opportunity to talk with Mayumi before the release of her movie staff's choice "Different Than before" that was awarded an SXSW Jury Award for Best Music video during 2023's SXSW festival. Watch some highlights of our conversation in the below video and then go through the entire interview in the article.

What are some topics you are likely to revisit repeatedly within your writing?

Mayumi Mayumi: My primary themes in my films are those of identity seeking and familial drama. My films mostly come from intimate settings. So, the interaction of families or even people who are caught in the middle of intergenerational family, intergenerational and cultural relationships is something that I am sure will appeal to.

What is your motivation?

Mayumi Mayumi greatest film's strength is that every one of them remains in existence for the rest of time. The narrative you present in that film will now be the medium, however, it'll remain alive for the remainder of the time. This is what the characters feel despite not being in their vicinity. There's a wide selection of films that I didn't see before my birth and had an enormous effect on my own life. If I had the opportunity to tell stories that would endure forever, this was the aim that I made after creating films I was awed by. Then I thought, "Ooh, there's more to this. It's more than telling people what I'm in love with."

We'd like to know the specifics of your Staff Pick experience.

Mayumi Mayumi The event was truly exciting. It was, in my opinion, an incredible achievement for everyone that was part of the process as it was an appeal to the community and everyone desired to see it succeed not just because each involved took on a large amount of effort to make this movie, but because the message is needed in the present and. it was released during Asian Heritage Month, so it was crucial that lots of people came across the film and watched the movie. The staff also played their part in boosting the popularity of the film. The experience was extremely satisfying for me.

I was familiar with Staff Picks in the past, and thought "Oh this is the most interesting group of people." I was feeling that "Oh what do I have to do? Where am I into this group? Am I worthy?" It's an amazing group of people that get together. I'm very happy to be a part of this community.

What's next?

Mayumi The next thing I'll need to create my first movie inspired by my short film called"AKASHI. This has been a long and challenging process which I am extremely pleased with getting at a point to create this. It's an exciting opportunity to showcase the film in events like these, and then be able to share it with others, later on.
