The business of Quilter doubles in three years because of Membership

Rebecca Bryan is a quilter writer, author and business owner. She is the designer of Bryan House Quilts. Rebecca has changed the way people think of textiles with her exclusive range of fabrics and threads as well as teaches live classes in quilting. She began her journey and seeking a more efficient means of supporting her family. Additionally, she made time to indulge in her love of art. Learn more about how changing to an online service gave Rebecca peace of mind in her financial situation and the peace of mind she was looking for.
What made you choose to work in the area of information commerce?

My quilting career started when I published my first collection of modern Rainbow quilts. Following that, I began giving classes at quilt shows as well as guilds across the United States. The time I taught coincided with the publication of my second book, 2: Modern Triangle Quilts.

My husband was looking for a possibility to work at an alternative location and moved the family that included four children in school to the Netherlands. Our being located in the Netherlands means it was not possible for me to go back to the US for a classroom visit!

I had thought of organizing my classes online. However, this change provided the impetus I needed.

The first digital item you designed? What is the main reason why you chose to make it available?

As I started my journey I decided to start the first class that I conducted employing an instructional Modern Triangle quilts book "Design Improv with Triangles". The class will instruct the participants in various engaging activities, which ultimately leads them to creating their very individual Modern Triangle quilt blocks. This course was picked because it was the most up-to-date book and also because I could understand the length that an online class is compared to a 3- hour or six-hour live class. (See my Equilateral Sampler quilt, which is shown at Rockport, Mass.)

Can you give additional details about the results of the workshop, which was a one-time purchase?

I was really impressed with the entire online experience that I provided to my students. First time I saw it, I was awestruck. I was completely shocked by how much excitement I was having instructing on camera as well as via Zoom. It's hard to describe how incredible (painfully!) camera-phobic experiences I've had in the past been, but stepping onto the stage to show the cameras of my students was fun. Additionally, I was able to see my students while we shared moments of fun even though it was online. It was all wonderful!

Thus, I began to provide additional online classes which began with a calendar for all year. When we make quilts our way through the year, we will refer to these "Blocks of the Months" Every month we create an entirely brand new block for quilting. At the end each year we put the quilt blocks together so that we are able to create an entire quilt. Woohoo! (See Rainbow Remix, my 2018 BOM.)

Was the reason behind your decision to launch an online service for subscriptions?

My "Block of the Month" programs increased from three to in a row, it allowed me to give my students greater help and benefit by merging my "Modern Triangle" initiatives in the same member. So, during the month of March 2020, I started the process of opening doors for "Make Modern Triangles" the official organization that assists quilters in designing the patterns make, construct, and create blocks which are modern Triangle quilts in the blockbuster genre.

They can select which particular tasks they want to complete. Additionally, they will receive advice as well as support in order to achieve their desire to "bust all the squares" by joining the quilters' community across the globe. This "Triangle Chatter" community is wonderful! Every day I am amazed by the progress and work pictures that are shared by members.

How did the intended recipients feel about your mailer?

     Favorably, I'd say!

The Block of the Month products are fun to create from my experiences as an educator. It's much more fun in the context of the group, and the excitement of every step when the blocks increase; the disappointment that something isn't working and feeling satisfied after completing each step. And then, the excitement of shouting "ta da!" together! This whole journey is amazing and is a part of our common bond.

What are your thoughts about the service you purchased, and how it are you able to use it to help your company?

Oh my. The most beneficial lesson I've learned, through the efforts of other people, was that I'm responsible for my own needs. Thus, I'm constantly seeking methods to reduce my burden.

When I began my own company, the primary aspect I wanted to accomplish was to earn enough funds to pay for my family's necessities without having to look for an "real" work. My first venture was launched at the age of 4 as my children were still infants with the hopes of increasing my income to the same level as an employee at an "real" occupation.

I dreamed of starting an online venture that allowed me to be online maybe 25% of the day working on my computer and then spend the remainder of the time in my sewing room.

With a truly imaginative mind and a love of teaching, it was very effortless for me to get absorbed by my quilts that I had made, in addition to developing a distinctive and unique item that I was able to sell. Imagine how busy I was working! This stress actually took me away from my sewing area and my goals.

In order to make things simpler and make things simple. My current focus is (mostly!) exclusively on the members. I've reduced everything to a single offering.

What effects did the launch of subscription-based services had for your business?

Focusing on increasing my income and membership as well as memberships, my income has seen grow by 50% in the past 3 years (thanks for your insightful report!). I've realized my ambition of creating a company that can support my family and one that is not dependent on my computer. I can work from my home office and create artwork.

It's refreshing. I'm happy about the services I'm providing to my colleagues. I find myself enjoyingwatching the work of my fellow members. In addition, I'm able to take longer breaks. I'm relaxed. Peace of mind clears me from the burden of daily living. Even though it's not perfect I'm aware of the things I'm creating and the ways I can improve it. I'm also aware of what to anticipate from the expansion of my business and changes in the next couple of years.

My membership provides me with security. Most of the time, I can see the entirety of the revenue generated by my company every year. There's no need for me to display my most recent work or offer items to market. My main focus is creating amazing content and communicating with my readers. I also write with my own material. Plus, I can be agile and flexible in caring for my children and relatives.

How could you help you achieve the outcomes you've always desired?

My main goal has always been and was to be simple. This has been an absolute accomplishment. It's not difficult for businesses online to turn complex in just a few minutes. It's a program that helps make life more simple and I'm all in favor of using it. Everything I need is in it. It's used in conjunction with the other programs (from the past that I never used ) I have a particular use of.

What tips would you give those who are considering launching an online venture that depends on subscriptions?

Do your best to get yourself to the "Beta" variant. Keep the version you've chosen to call "Beta" for longer periods of time than you believe needed. I wished I'd kept mine in beta mode longer. In beta mode it will be easier to discover what is working also, and then move your idea to the next step. You'll then be able to invest your time and effort polishing and perfecting those things which are working. Be simple in the moment and focus on simple things. Take your test today. If you're not taking your test sooner and it is taking longer, the more difficult test you'll have to take!

is the most effective method to turn your experience to money
