What made you choose to enter the world of knowledge-based commerce?
My career in quilting started when I published my first book Modern Rainbow Quilts. In the following years, I traveled to give classes at guilds and quilt shows around all over the United States. After that I started expanding my offerings when I launched my book 2: Contemporary Triangle Quilts.
After that, my husband got his new job. This brought our entire family, including children in education in the Netherlands. Living overseas made it unrealistic for us to return to the US for a classroom visit!
I was thinking about hosting my classes on the internet. However, this change was the one I was looking for.
What was the very first product you released? What was the motivation behind why you chose the product?
The first time I began my journey, I decided to start my first workshop which I conducted from the Contemporary Triangle Quilts book, "Design Improv with Triangles". The class will guide the student through a series of activities that will allow them to create their very individual Modern Triangle quilt blocks. The class was selected due to the fact that it was the very first time I'd given my most recent book and I was able to observe how far the online workshops can be as compared to a 3 hour or six-hour class in person. (See my Equilateral Sampler Quiltthat I exhibited at Rockport, Mass.)

Do you have more details on the results of your training sessions that were part of only one transaction?
I truly enjoyed the entire journey of using digital cameras in my classroom and with students. One thing I noticed was that it completely surprising how much I loved teaching on the camera and also via Zoom. It's impossible to quantify the degree to which (painfully!) my shyness with cameras used to be. However, stepping up with my students made me very satisfied. Furthermore, I got to get to know the students as we came to get acquainted even though it was virtual. It was wonderful!
After that, I offered more online courses beginning by offering a complete year-long the year. The process of quilting is referred to as "Blocks that of the Months" Every month we create each month a new block of quilt. As the year approaches its end, we stitch all of blocks of quilt together to complete our quilt. Woohoo! (See Rainbow Remix, my 2018 BOM.)

What made you choose to make a product based on subscription?
The amount of my "Block of the Month" programs grew from 3 and I realized I could provide my students more benefit and assistance by storing the entirety of my "Modern Triangle" projects in one group. The month of March, 2020, I inaugurated"Making Modern Triangles, "Make Modern Triangles" The official club that assists quilters in designing create, construct, and complete blocks that are blockbuster modern triangle quilts.
The members have the option of choosing the exact projects they would like to create and they enjoy guidance and assistance from me when they are driven by the desire to "bust their blocks" by working alongside fellow quilters from all over the globe. This "Triangle Chatter" community is incredible! Every day I am blown away at the effort as well as the photos are shared by our users.
What did your clients feel about your service?
Favorably, I'd say!
Block of the Month products Block of the Month products can be a blast creating from my point of view as the instructor. However, the whole experience is truly a part of the group. There is a sense of anticipation and expectation for the next step as the piles of blocks multiply The feeling of being a part of the community whenever something doesn't go as intended. Feeling the satisfaction at having accomplished each step and shouting "ta Da!" together! It's all amazing and all part of camaraderie is shared by us all in a larger community.
What have you learned when you signed up for your monthly subscription? Did it teach you something that you use to run your company today?
Oh, my. One of the most important lessons I learned by myself was that I do an over amount of effort for myself. This is the reason I'm constantly looking for ways to reduce my workload.
As I founded my company the first thing I wanted to do was to earn enough money to afford my family's necessities and not have to look for the "real" job. I began when I was four years old as my children were infants, with the hope to increase my income to be similar to the earnings of a "real" work.
I always had the dream of starting a company where I could spend about 25% of my time using my laptop along with all the time I spent crafting in my sewing area.
However, as someone who loves to teach it was simple for me to lose myself in every quilt I've ever created as well as creating a work that was based on the fabric. As you can imagine, it was an awful lot of work! It also took me out of my sewing area and from my goals.
In order to simplify, I concentrate (mostly!) on my membership. I've streamlined everything down into essentially one offering.
What effect did launching the subscription-based service for your company?
By simplifying and focusing on creating my membership, my income has grown by a third over the past three years (thanks for those sweet and sweet statistics!). My goal has been achieved to create a company that can support my family, and an environment where I'm not tied to my laptop: I'm now able to work at my home office and create artwork.
I'm more relaxed. I'm pleased with the services that I'm able to offer my clients. I enjoywatching my members' creations. Also, I'm more free. I'm relaxed. Peace of mind helps clear my head. While it's not perfect I'm aware of the project I'm working on, how to improve it and anticipate how it will expand and evolve over the next few years.
With my membership, there's considerably less pressure. In the majority of cases I'm able to see the full picture of my business' income for the year. It doesn't bother me the fact that I must be aware of everything that I'm developing or designing a brand new product for sale. My main focus is to provide amazing content and connection for my loved ones and friends and also creating my own work. In addition, I'm constantly available and capable of taking care of my loved ones.
What helped you get the results you have?
My aim was always about cutting down on complexity, and this is why this approach made the sense. It's so simple for a business online to get complicated in a short time. offers simplification, and I'm here. Everything I need is in the program, and apart from some other programs (from earlier times, which I was not using ) I just use.
What suggestions would you provide anyone else looking to begin the subscription business?
It is recommended that you push yourself hard in your "Beta" version and then keep your version "Beta" to a longer period than you think that you have to. I wished I'd kept mine in beta mode longer. Based on your experiences, identify what works, take it further. You should spend time and effort polishing and fine-tuning the things that work. Keep it simple and stay in the forefront of simpleness. Get started now with your test. The more time you put off, the more difficult it is!
