Motion and space in illustration The CreativeMindClass Blog

Mar 16, 2022

Ever since I was a kid I've loved to draw, paint, and play with my hands. It has been the easiest way to express myself. But growing as a child in Taiwan and in Taiwan, having the art of making was often considered a snub as a way to make money, and I was frequently instructed by my parents to learn deeper into practical topics otherwise I'd end in the streets starving to death.

It is a blessing that my mom has always encouraged me to pursue anything that I wanted and did anything she could to assist me reach my objectives. After coming back to America, United States and graduating high school, I decided that I would like to pursue art as profession.

I was admitted to ArtCenter College of design, studied Illustration intended to go into the feature animation field. However, along the way I discovered motion graphics and was enthralled by its versatility and all it's amazing art work created by people I greatly respect.

How would you describe the style you prefer?

The process is still in the road to discovering a fashion that I'm able to identify as my unique. I have the tendency to experiment with new things every so often... For instance, one month I'll feel like doing very colorful things, soon I'll want to experiment with more naturalistic colors; I'll be really into a shape car style for a few months, one day suddenly I'll become bored and want to try something that's more built on lines.

Sometimes, I'll attempt to merge opposite things that I find intriguing like I'm on the endless journey of discovery and learn. But after dabbling a little in a few places I'm starting to realize that there are certain designs, colours, or compositions I'm attracted to. Maybe it's the beginning of a style?

This is part of the reasons why I am so happy working for Oddfellows and sometimes, I can't believe I am fortunate to be part of an incredible group of people. We are required the ability to change our style from project to project, virtually every project has to be completed with different ways as well as I'm discovering new information from my colleagues every day.

What is the key to making your illustrations?

I like to make sketches of topics that interest me or am interested in. I then attempt to give my own spin to it.

Most importantly, I love having fun. Fun is the most important factor in creating anything that viewers are able to see that a creator was having fun making things... it adds sparkle.

While fighting the pandemic, watching the staff at my studio as well as my friends doing their best to help the world In the end, I decided to create a Patreon named Joy&Frens, where half of my net income goes to charities chosen by my patrons. On it, I share Tips & Tricks, process videos, ask friends to join me for collaborations and share their wisdom.

I also show my work on Instagram as well as on my web site.
