More control over Community notifications to you as well as your members

Jul 6, 2022

We've updated community notification settings to create a better member experience (and fewer email messages). Here's what's new.

What's the best way to inform members of what's going on in your community?

It is important to inform your users know about interesting conversations and engage them in more discussions -- but you also must give your members the ability to control their experience and avoid notification overload. In our conversations with our creators how important it is to strike this careful equilibrium.

The latest version of the community feature, you and your members have more control over the messages. It means more active conversations, less flooded inboxesand a social platform that can bring both of you and closer.

Manage your personal notification settings as a creator or member

Members of the community and authors can now choose which notifications they would like to receive on the same topic: Posts that are new or replies to your posts, and/or new replies to your comments.

When you log into an online community as a member Go to Settings, then click on "Edit" under Notifications. (Creators are able to find this on the Notifications tab in your Account's settings.)

You'll see all of the subjects that you're following in the community. Just check or uncheck the boxes to choose the types of notifications you would prefer to receive on each topic.

In this case, for instance, you may prefer to be notified of updates, comments, or responses in an area that is time-sensitive like Live Events or Announcements. In other areas it is possible to only get updates each time someone posts an announcement - or opt out of notification for the topic completely.

You may also toggle your notifications on and off through clicking "Mute All" or "Unmute All".

Additionally, you are able to change your per-topic notification settings conveniently by accessing the "All topics"page or an specific topic page. Click the bell icon, after which you can set your preferences for notifications.

Check out this guide for a step-by-step instruction on how you can change the settings for notifications - and feel free to share it with your users also!

Set default notifications for a topic

Creators can also set the default notifications settings for every area of your community. This gives you greater control over the member experience.

Instead of sending out notification emails to your members for every blog post, you can choose which topics your members get informed about, and what types of notifications they receive.

Here's how:

From the Community section of your dashboard, click on "All Topics". After that, you can click "..." next to the topic you'd like to edit and then select "Edit topic". There, you can select the settings for your notifications under "Default notification settings".

Users can alter these notification settings at any time to their account. If users haven't altered their settings, they will default to the settings set by the creator for each topic.

We're hoping these updates to the community provide a better experience to you and your members. Thank you for taking the time to read!
