What exactly is a digital course?

A digital course is when you teach the subject .... Um, Digitally? Okay, seriously though, a digital course is an organized learning experience offered on a digital platform. The majority of digital courses guides students through this learning through audio, video or any combination of these.

Digital courses may be synchronous, meaning that students are taking part in the learning process live. They can also be asynchronous in which students can learn on their own terms. (We provide a complete description of what the distinction is. )

How to create digital courses

1. Find your ideal students

The first step of creating any digital course is knowing the audience it is intended for. It's what we call an Ideal student. If you've got something that you want to impart, you'll need an individual who would like to master that thing.

Select Your Perfect Student.

Your ideal student an intersection of someone that wants to be able to master something using your expertise to instruct.

It's important to be clear about this: courses that are specific, targeted, Ideal students are much more effective. Each time.

Your primary goal before you start to create a digital course, is to have a clear understanding on who it's for.

We are always happy to recommend that you discover the Ideal student by speaking to several persons! Set up a meeting with 10 or 15 people who you think are interested in your course, and ask the students questions such as:

  • What are you trying to master that you require some help with?
  • Which are your biggest issues you face in learning?
  • What do you most wish to learn?
  • How much budget could be allocated to a training course for that?

Be sure to be clear about what you are able to provide. Here are some questions you can ask yourself as you are finding the Ideal student.

  • What are I that is uniquely capable of helping? (Hint That it's often the person you once were. )
  • What parts of my story give me something unique to share?
  • What could I talk about for half an hour without notes? (Not the requirement to do this without notes It's just a great thought experiment)

2. Choose your Big Purpose

When your Ideal Student has been identified and you have a plan in place, you are able to make what is known as an big purpose .

A Big Purpose can be described as a transformative process that students are going to undergo as they complete your class. Create a Big Purpose such as:

Big Purpose- New Image

3. Pick your delivery method

In the course of time, while planning how to make a digital course it is important to think about the way you'd like to present the course.

There are lots of possible ways to accomplish this. As digital courses are in existence for the last decade or so Many people imagine a prerecorded (asynchronous) class where students take a course by lesson and watch videos.

The  are able to accomplish this if you like.

But there are so many choices! Our students are enjoying cohort classes currently, which are basically a live-streamed course with a live audience. The students love them too! This gives them the advantage of getting to know each other better and asking questions live in the moment.

So as you think about the way you'd like to present, consider your strengths and weak points as a presenter.

  • Do you thrive off a live presentation that has a bit of chance for errors?
  • Do you want to become a swarm of nerves? You could gain by a written script as well as a chance to "rerecord" when you make a mistake? up?
  • Are you an effective presenter or a better writer?
  • Have you got an amazing voice but don't want your face on camera?

The thing is, when designing a course for digital, it is pretty much your possibility of offering the course using a method that works best for you. That's cool.

Also, think about what else you can do that can help students engage and be successful. As an example, we are a community here at Mighty, and a community combined with a class is an extremely powerful concept.

Here are some additional options you can incorporate into your classes:

  • Live events
  • Virtual Events
  • Community
  • Live stream
  • Member chat
  • Coach group
  • 1:1 coaching

Make it your own when thinking about how to structure it. Use every tool at your disposal to create the best possible experience to your students.

4. Choose a digital course platform

It will require a place to store this information. And a lot of digital instructors are distracted by the thought of a course system.

It's perfectly normal. There are SO MANY alternatives. Most people swear by the one that they prefer.

We won't get deep into details about selecting the best technology here, but we do the same in this blog post .

However, based on what we have discussed previously Try to select an online course that offers you a lot of flexibility. You should be able to offer a live-streamed course if you want. You must be able to plug that live course into an LMS and then resell it. You should be able to easily add things like communities, live events or coaching if you want to.

This is why we integrated courses into our community platform on Mighty. Our Spaces are flexible and offer all the features you'll ever require or want to deliver courses that pack an impressive punch including live streaming, live events and an LMS. It also includes member profiles, a discussion forum as well as all chats and messaging, and a ton of content options.

5. Make a plan for the material

Sometime in the near future you'll begin plotting out the material for your digital course.

If you've identified the Big Goal in the above paragraph, it's a great idea to connect it directly to the educational goals that your students should achieve.

When you are planning the content for your digital course Try to think backwards. What goals do you wish your students to be able to do? In the event that they do, what will you have to teach them to do that thing?

Beware of the urge to put into all the details you know about a subject. Concentrate on what's most likely to lead your student's ideal transformation they need and want.

You can create an outline for how the lesson will go. If you want, use an LMS to plan out the content of each lesson of. If you do end up teaching a live course, this is a valuable exercise. You can then sketch out the objectives for each class and also the material.

6. Presell

It's not necessary to go through this. However, if you're creating digital courses, pre-selling is a great idea. It's basically making sure that people pay prior to when you teach the course.

Preselling works REALLY WELL with cohort courses since you teach the course once the students have opted to attend. There are other ways to presell asynchronous courses as well.

There are a bunch of benefits that come with this.

  • Start by establishing your earnings upfront so you are successful before you begin. (You can also reinvest some part of it into the course, if the ).
  • It is clear to have a feeling of whether or not people would like this course or not.
  • If it's not a good idea to sell it, then don't build it! Instead of wasting the time creating a product and hoping people will buy it and then you'll know right away if it's going to work. It is possible to make a few tweaks so that it can be profitable.

7. Record/Go Live

The next step is to build the course. If you're pre-recording the course, it will involve getting your equipment set up as well as getting ready for the presentation.

If you're running a live course, it's slightly more challenging in the beginning. It's important to share every aspect of your course. Get ready to go live, make sure that your recording is in place, and all that jazz.

8. Market it

If you haven't sold your digital course yet, now comes the part where you need to market the course.

There are a lot of ways to promote an online course, and we've put together a full guide that is available in this article .

In the meantime, here's a quick list of methods you can promote your digital course:

  • Email your list
  • Post to social media
  • Invite individuals directly (especially the Ideal Students you talked to)
  • Host a webinar
  • Create a landing page and send traffic towards it (eg. with paid ads)
  • Include the course on your website and funnel search engine traffic
  • Invite your existing members of your group! (One of the other reasons building a community will pay off)
  • Create promotional events in conjunction alongside other creators in your area
  • Be a guest on podcasts, or write guest blogs
  • Pitch major publication

9. Grow and adapt

The process of becoming a successful digital course creator usually takes a long time. It's not a one-and-done thing.

So to the multitudes of sites that offer "endless earnings" through putting a course on the internet and then not thinking about it It's likely to not be so simple.

But stick to it. Since as you determine how to improve your reach, and continue to tweak the course you'll have a greater chance that you'll find a winning course structure that works for you and your students.

Are you ready to begin?
