How KevOnStage is building a better entertainment industry

"I believe the most effective way to tell the story of the journey that led me to where I am today is one person and one film at a go," is comedian and creator Kevin Fredericks - better known by his online moniker KevOnStage. Kev talks in his studio and office located at Los Angeles, the epicenter of his most creative venture so far: KevOnStage Studios. However, the creator of digital media hasn't landed Hollywood-level production facilities in just a couple of hours. Kev's business grew from a side hustle to a full-time business over 10 years of digital grind.

"Before the path of a comedian was to move towards L.A., get on The Tonight Show, and attempt to persuade agents," said the actor. "Now because of the expansion of the internet it is possible to connect with your personal supporters and make yourself a famous." Since 2011, KevOnStage has slowly but slowly amassed over 1M+ Instagram followers and 800K+ YouTube users, and has been posting hilarious funny videos to his loyal fans on the internet and has been often referred to by the Stage Crew.

"I think that making your own path I believe it is crucial," adds Kev. "Right moment, I'm putting together my own show which I produced and filmed, and funded that no one from Hollywood needed to accept. I'm in a position to create everything about it , and present direct to my viewers."

 The basics of HTML0

Kev has been working on his online community more than a decade ago. He says that it did not take long to kick off. "I haven't seen any significant results as KevOnStage up to probably 2017" declares Kev. "Before I was doing my best, but not receiving many views, like many other people."

Then Kev needed to find the most important thing he could do in the process of producing content that was true to his personal sensibilities and beliefs. "When creators don't work with their hearts it's exhausting," states Kev. "I was always okay with not exploding at times but being able to create content I felt passionate about. In my opinion, it's because of that I've been more successful, as opposed to performing whatever I was doing."

As his comics business began to take off in earnest, Kev took to touring across his native United States with other comics However, the flu epidemic caused these meetings to come to an end. Keen to think of ways to sustain the momentum the brother of Kev approached Kev with an concept of his own which could be called an online streaming service.

 Returning your power

Kev is the first person to acknowledge that having an OTT service wasn't not in his plans in the future as the next step to the business. "We were first just trying to make our own independent films and then my brother told me: 'I've discovered a way to create our own application at some point in the future,'" he declares. "I did not think of that as a possibility."

Kev approached his business associate and producer Brennon Edwards. He suggested that they collaborate on the idea of creating an OTT application. "It was a straightforward choice," says Brennon, currently the president of KevOnStage Studios, because it provided them with the ability to produce (and make money by selling) the content they create according to their own rules. "We are living in a time that the hurdles for accessing the ability to be creative is significantly lower. It has changed the game we play."

"We were successful in achieving what we'd hoped Hollywood to achieve for us and instead, we've begun doing it all by ourselves," he says. "We work directly with our audience, which has been a blessing. They're the ones who give us the money for us to accomplish the things we'd like to accomplish. We get the power back, as creators."

 Empowering fellow creators

Since the launch of KOSS Brennon, Kev and co-founder and Co-CEO Melissa Fredericks have consciously created an environment of creativity and support which allows other Black creators to develop their own creative ideas. "I only feel grateful for this place and that it has people who work there, that we allow people to follow their dreams in KOSS," says Kev.

What's so wonderful about this story is the fact it goes beyond the is expected of us in Hollywood says, and applying it to our own," Melissa says. Melissa. "We're making a positive impact upon the world who surround us. We're not waiting around for Hollywood to acknowledge your work. It is now time to take the decision, and we took this choice on our own. Period. This is something we can handle by ourselves. Period. And we can give people the chance to do things they might not be able to. Period."
