Abstract geometric and graphic illustrations: imaginary drawings deeply rooted in graffiti art by Marc David Spengler

An integral part of creating geometric illustrations is the anticipation of unforeseen outcome. Marc insists that each shape and each colour can be seen as an impulse reaction to the shape and colour already drawn. Optical illusions, fake shadows transitions from flatness into the sense of space, and seemingly small elements - but when they were displayed at Ampersand Gallery in Portland this year, the works mesmerised the viewer.

"My name is Marc David Spengler, I'm 25 years old, I live in a suburb in Stuttgart, Germany. Since the age of a child, I've always been sketching a lot. I can remember that when I was in fifth grade, I made a note that my career aspiration was to become a vehicle artist. In the next few years, when I was 12 I was introduced to the world of graffiti which has been a huge inspirational source for me ever since.

What is the reason artists choose to use geometric forms?

It's not my turn to be an artist who is doing graffiti however I'm still observing geometric forms every day via social media, magazines and even books. After I graduated from school in 2014, I began learning about in communication designs at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart and am currently taking classes today under the tutelage taught by Patrick Thomas.

Apart from my studies In addition, I'm involved in exhibitions as well as brand collaborations and my sketchbooks. In terms of my illustrations I'm working mostly on abstract geometric patterns and bright colour combinations that are attempting to be balanced in an undefined frame. My aim for each composition which I'm working on is to achieve the illusion of harmony.

How do you create geometric art?

In order to create geometric art I'm not doing draw with pencil beforehand which is why a large portion of my drawings are imaginary. I like to start working on the outside by drawing a background silhouette, and then I imagine what's in the interior. So I'm constantly reacting to the previously drawn shapes and this makes the process fascinating to me since I'm not sure what it's going to look like when it's finished.

I prefer making small geometric drawings because they give me greater control over the overall composition. I also try not to overwhelm it by adding numerous specifics. When drawing, I also like to experiment with the provided parameterslike creating the illusion of shadows or an optical illusion since everything is feasible in the two-dimensional world."
