Eva Munnich, 3D artist Eva Munnich: 3D artist - The CreativeMindClass Blog

Aug 6, 2022

Eva Munnich is an animator and illustrator based in London. As a visual artist she creates cute 2D/3D characters. She was a film student at schools of art in Germany as well as worked on all kinds of animation-related projects. In the wake of a inability to find a new challenge, Eva actively sought new ways to stretch her wings. A few decades ago, she traveled to London to explore its thriving, vibrant art scene, and she decided to venture into the realm of illustration and character design.

Below , you can learn about how Eva turned around her creative pathway and learn more about the special X-Files animation project she worked together with Phil Brookes.

In search of new challenges and a creative career direction

Prior to my move to London in 2017 I was in a small town in Germany and freelanced for a while as an After Effects animator. It wasn't a lot of creative opportunities, my skills plateaued quickly and I became very annoyed.

The move from London and getting acquainted with all the lovely animation people here gave me a huge boost. I felt like: "Damn, I'm running with cool kids right now and I should get my stuff. "

After visiting the 2019 Pictoplasma event, I decided to join the community of eccentric character designers. It was clear quickly that my characters work best when they're in 3D - something that I'm still learning, which is hard but also very rewarding!

My work caught the eye of Greenhouse Animation, and now I'm represented as a director by them.

About the X-Files project and the secret of socks disappearing

One of the first project for clients that I created using my new design style was my Covered by Lemonade clip.

Lemonade Insurance approached me to create a work to accompany the continuous Instagram collaborative with artists. Since the company is a content insurance company, the idea of cute household objects in danger immediately popped into my head. That's how the X-Files project came to life.

I was in the winter lockdown rewatching all of the x-files. So, involving a classic alien abduction seemed to be logical. However, all of the characters needed to remain in the same location at the time of finalization so that the animation loop could be closed so none of them could actually get abducted - this is the reason I got an idea of having the washing machine pop open as well as the single pink sock fly towards the UFO.

While creating the UFO while giving the UFO small legs, I realized that everything would be put in place. The UFO has lost its socks and is now regaining it!

To me, creating a memorable story best involves combining diverse things that may seem incompatible at first. In order to make something surprising take place and also to give inanimate objects an identity by putting humorous faces on them is the most fun for me!

The animation workflow

My work process starts by drawing sketches of my characters, and then a storyboard. I made an animation of Lemonade to convey the concept as well as the time. After that, I jump to Cinema 4D and model all my characters. Also, this is where I test out the materials I use and create style frames.

After the animation is completed in Cinema 4D is done, I move to After Effects for the compositing process and finalization. For the pink light beam for instance, is created with After Effects.

Concerning the sound effects and working together with Phill Brookes

It was the first time I did with a sound designer, Phil Brookes who really rocked it! His contribution elevates the video to the next level and connects everything perfectly! It was an incredible project to work on, and I hope to do more projects like it!

We've spoken to Phil about the process of producing sounds to be used in the X-Files project. Check out the interview of Phil Brookes.

At the moment I'm learning new techniques to rig characters and create beautiful textures using Cinema 4D and Redshift. I experiment with combining 2D and 3D animation, and am excited to find out where my character design journey will take me in the future!

Visual artists can get tips about how to alter the direction of their careers

Some tips I can give to anyone wanting to change directions:

  1. Find which technique suits your thoughts best, and then take the time to learn it! Moving design is a process that feels like you need to know everything in every program there is. It's just not feasible.
  2. Take your weirdness seriously and don't minimize the significance of it. Your peculiarity is distinctive. Your unique voice and style is distinctive.
  3. Take your time and embrace your ideas. Whatever it is that's happening in your mind take it on and create your own!

We're impressed by Eva's visual artworks, the creative path she's on, and the change she made. We at CreativeMindClass we are convinced that creative people have a great ability to create paths similar to Play-Doh to make them stunning. We're excited to see ambitious ideas and brave people succeeding. Thanks for sharing your story Eva!
