Celebrate History and Embrace Progression: International Women's Day 2024

Mar 14, 2024

On the 8th day of March everyone gathers in celebration of International Women's Day (IWD). This day is a time to celebrate the remarkable achievements made by women, reflect on the obstacles they face, and recommit ourselves to ensuring that equality is the norm. As we look back, it wasn't a day that grew in a flash. It's the culmination of years of battle, perseverance and unwavering commitment. This is why we celebrate the day by encouraging you to as well as we go on a brief journey of the long and rich history of IWD which is a proof of the power of collective action.

Beginning with Seeds of Change to a global Movement

The seeds for IWD were sown at the beginning of the 20th century, a time in which the struggle for women's rights was gaining momentum. On the 8th of March, 1857, women workers took to the streets in protest against poor working conditions and subpar protections for women within their trade of clothing. This strike called for the reduction of working hours and fair wages for living. Years later in 1908 on the 8th of March an organized march by female working in the needle trades was held to protest child labor, conditions in sweatshops, as well as demand women's right to vote. A year later, in 1910, March 8th became annually observed in the year of International Women's Day.

The Catalyst to Change

Through the 20th century IWD served as a potent catalyst for transformation. It became a platform for women to raise their voices on issues like the right to vote, fair work conditions, pay and the right to access education. In 1975 in 1975, the United Nations officially recognized IWD, solidifying its global significance.

A Day of Celebration and Action

Presently, IWD is celebrated in many ways, from inspiring parades to intimate gatherings. It's an opportunity to honor outstanding women from every field that range from artists and scientists to activists and entrepreneurs. But, IWD isn't just about celebrating, it's also an opportunity to take action. It highlights that the struggle for equality between genders remains far from being over. The fight must be continued to push for equal opportunities, challenge negative stereotypes and help empower women and girls everywhere. The main theme of International Women's Day 2024 is " Invest in Women: Accelerating Progress" with the globally used hashtag #InvestInWomen..

According to the UN Five areas are key to pushing ahead this hashtag until it becomes outdated:

  • Investing in women, an issue of human rights:Time is running out. The issue of gender equality is the most pressing human rights problem, affecting everyone.
  • Stopping poverty Due to the COVID epidemic and conflict over the last 75 million people have been forced into extreme poverty from in the year 2000. It is imperative to take immediate action in order to stop more than 342 million women and girls living in poverty by 2030.
  • Financial management that is gender responsive: Conflicts and rising prices may lead 75% of nations to reduce public expenditure until 2025. This will negatively impact women as well as their most essential services.
  • Transitioning to a sustainable economy and a care society:The current economic system disproportionately impacts women. Advocates propose a shift to a green economy and care society that will increase the voices of women.
  • Supporting feminist change-makers: Despite leading efforts, feminist organizations receive only 0.13 percent of the official aid to development.

Beyond the Day

Although IWD is a significant day for women, the quest for gender equality should not be limited to one day. We are a company founded by inclusion and empowerment, we strive to create a space where women can flourish throughout the year.
