My personal background

My name is Ekaterina Boguslavskaya. I was born in Russia.

I studied in Moscow However, I was a summer camper in the countryside.

It was cold and there was no hot water and the home was heated by a furnace as well as the neighbor's raised cows and goats. Wonderful times! Apart from nature and cycling I was a huge fan of animation. All my peers grew up and stopped liking cartoons, but I did the opposite! I realized it could become my favorite thing to do. This is how I ended up in the film academy in Moscow, Russia.

My style

I want my drawings to always provoke some profound sensations. As if you are sitting in front of the fire after a day of skiing or hiking in the mountains.

My process

I am awestruck by drawing. There's something that it shares with meditation. While I'm at work in the dark, it might get dark outside, I'll get hungry, but it doesn't really affects me while working.

Presently, I work in both the illustration industry as well as animation... and I even design board games. I really love what I do.

I've always drawn often. However, it began to look better after I completed my studies. As I decided what and how I draw.

My advice to doubtful visual artists

Find something you love and you will surely enjoy the thing you like about it. Try to listen less to others who you don't appreciate what they're doing. All will be well! And there will be people who will appreciate what you've done.

My technique

I draw almost everything on my iPad in Procreate. I sometimes finish something using Photoshop.

The iPad has transformed my life. Now I work at home, in libraries, in cafes. When I pick a location for work and move around, I do not just sit at my desk. Therefore, the iPad is an amazing tool which combines traditional drawing with computer drawing.

The iPad has great brush brushes. For example, I bought watercolor brushes from "The Watercolor MaxPack - Brushes for Procreate". It is a joy every time I use them. They're as close to real watercolors as is possible.

A few thoughts on the way I conduct my work

I attempt to draw a rough outline of the objects. Since I find hard lines harsh and cold.

Sometimes, I tint my shadows cold blueish using the multiply setting. Sometimes I use overlay. However, I'm not sure much about it.

Procreate comes with some great blur options, check the settings! There are several kinds of them, and they're very good. But mostly I draw as I draw using traditional materials on canvas or paper.

I'm still looking, learning about my subject, and trying to get closer to my image that I enjoy by doing personal projects.

Information about the Teriberka series

I visited there following my travels (to Teriberka). Russian North, the Arctic. It was a town that used to build ships and catch a lot of fish. Now it's kind of abandoned.

Google it, please! It's beautiful.

I'm always impressed by the North.

I love my animals, people, the millions of shades of Moss. The tiny berries have a lot of nutrients, and are more nutritious than any tropical fruit. It's very impressive.

Northern rock formations look similar to the skin of huge elephants! These are the feelings that I tried to show in these photos.

About the Tiny Things series

This project came into my mind when I was very tired from work, the pandemic as well as the city.

Photos from the woods

I purchased an macro lens, and then went to the woods. And how much incredible beauty was under my feet! Every inch of nature was stunning. It gave me plenty of inspiration and creativity. This is how the project came about.

No matter what happens, there is a miracle that is right there!

How can I plan my work time

The most difficult thing to do is control your time and relaxation and to answer 'no' to offers that are not particularly suitable. Or to take on many tasks and try to survive and never get bored of doing what you love. All this I am still studying.

The creative blockages

The hard aspect is actually the procedure itself Sometimes it fails to take place. It's not what I like about the outcome. You can go through up to eight hours and get angry. Then, a few days after, you can redo it in an hour and everything looks good. What's that? Magic.

This is my little piece of advice about how to get over creativity blocks

If you are faced with a particular kind of task - do not sit down immediately to draw (if possible). Allow your mind to think as you go along working on other tasks. That's how I think you can find the best solution.

What do I think of my work

If I had to rate my own work - I wouldn't give myself the grade of "excellent". It's exhausting, and I torture myself. But on the other hand I am pushed ahead.

Drawing can be like an adventure!

If you have tickets to another country. You already know something from Google but something might surprise you right on the spot. At first, it looks like a cool adventure to me.
